Electronic Protected Health Information

What is PHI?

PHI denotes Protected Health Information of patients. This also includes e-PHI which is Electronic Protected Health Information. These are health information that is electronically stored like health reports, patient information like name, address, social security number, prescriptions, insurance details, etc.

PHI is important for a covered entity. Entities that handle PHI / e-PHI in order to carry out their daily businesses are called covered entities. Any form of healthcare providers like doctors, pharmacies, clinics, etc; insurance providers, transcription service providers, and any business associates that help to store e-PHIs who are the bridge between the health providers and transcription service providers are all covered entities and must adhere to the HIPAA rules and regulations laid down by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
